How to choose a laptop: the specs that matter (and the ones that don't)

Processor, memory, storage, screen and battery explained in plain English, with today's prices on the laptops Australian stores stock most.

Laptop listings are a wall of model numbers. Two laptops with the same name can be very different machines. Focus on these, in this order.

Memory: 16GB is the new minimum

Memory (RAM) is what lets you keep many tabs and apps open. On most thin laptops it's soldered on and can't be upgraded later, so buy what you'll need in four years. 16GB is the sensible floor; 32GB suits video editing, large spreadsheets and software development.

Storage: 512GB or more

An SSD makes any laptop feel quick. 256GB fills up fast once you add photos and a few apps. Go 512GB if you can, or 1TB if you keep media on the laptop.

Processor: match it to the job

For study, office work and browsing, an efficient chip (Apple M-series, Intel Core Ultra, AMD Ryzen AI or Snapdragon X) gives long battery life and enough speed. For gaming or 3D work, the graphics card matters more than the processor: compare the GPU model first.

Screen and weight

A 14" laptop is the best balance of screen and portability for most people. Look for at least 1920×1200, and an OLED or high-brightness panel if you work outdoors or watch a lot of video. Under 1.5 kg is easy to carry every day.

Battery

Manufacturer claims are measured in light tests. Real-world reviews are a better guide; efficient ARM and Apple chips lead here.

Check the exact configuration

When you compare prices, match the processor, memory and storage, not just the model name. Our product pages split laptops by configuration so the cheapest price is for the one you actually want.
